Asynchronous suggests something that is not synchronized. The digital logic and also data transfer theories state that clock signal is not required by asynchronous object. Thus, the systems or circuits using asynchronous object or asynchronous theory are always active. They do not require a high or low signal to synchronize their actions. Example of asynchronous system is the packet-switched system like the Ethernet and the internet. Internet is a well-known example of asynchronous system. The internet has its protocol suite called internet protocol suite or TCP/IP protocol suite. This is used over several data link layer protocols.

The recent mobile telephone technologies make use of packet-switching which is an asynchronous system. Such system is also termed connectionless networking because it does not require connections and synchronizing clocks. Another, example of is Asynchronous Transfer Mode which makes use of cell relay and not of packet switching. The cell relay protocols are dependent on the information-content and do not have flow control or error connection.
