Adjacent generally refers to next to or near. In terms of adjective it means contiguous, adjoining or abutting. In terms of geometry adjacent sides refers to a polygon join at their vertex.

Adjacent refers to nearest n terms in space or position. It is instantly adjoining exclusive of intervening legroom. Some of the common examples are "had adjacent rooms"; "in the next room"; "the person sitting next to me"; "our rooms were side by side".

In terms of mathematics and computer science it refers to a kind of graph, which is generally the basic object of study that relates to graph theory.

Adjacent means adjoining space without any intervention. Therefore the next nearest space or area is known as adjacent. They may or may not have a common boundary. Thus it can be an object, device or a person which is very near or bordering upon. Adjacent angles, adjacent villages, adjacent things are all usages of this term.

Thus instead of saying that our rooms were side by side it can be said that our rooms are adjacent. Likewise New York and the adjacent cities is also a usage of this term.
