Ostanito is a musical term originating from Italian. Any melodic and / or rhythmic beat or pattern that is repeated persistently can be called ostinato. It can be purely rhythmic or harmonic or a repetitive rhythmic – harmonic scheme. As a technique, it has been used by almost all musicians from Debussy, to the avant-garde composers.
John Williams, the composer, used it as theme music in the film "Jaws". He used two notes in the bass section and repeated them in various tempos to express different activities of the shark. Another example is the song "Take a Chance On Me" by the famous Swedish group ABBA. Benny and Bjorn sing the phrase "take a chance on me- take a chance on me" repeatedly, while Agnetha and Frida continue with the song.
