As far as the actualy definition, I'm not quite sure but I'm trying to find out. But where it comes from I can answer. Zavala is Basque, so it's technically spanish, but it hails from the northern most region of spain and has french influences. The name does have some higher status (at least I know for my family) and was originally De Zavala before immigration to the states. The De indicates a higher status.
