Ballast is a word for heavy material that is found in the hold of a ship or a gondola of a balloon for the purpose of enhancing stability. It is also a substance that is laid on the bed or roads for railways. It is made of coarse gravel or crushed rock. Thus it refers to a substance that gives stability. It is a word that has Scandinavian origins but is hard to be defines in apt terms because of its narrow implications.

This word has been derived from Middle Dutch and means "useless load" when translated into English. This word is used both as a noun and a verb. While the above mentioned meanings refer to ballast as a noun this word as a verb explains the act of making something stable with the help of ballast.
