The word redoubt has it origin in Latin. It is taken from the word reductus which meant concealed place. It was obtained from the past participle of reducere. Reducere means to withdraw or lead back. It was adapted by the Medieval Latin as reductus, by Italian as ridotto and by French as redoute. Redoubt is a noun. It is small fortification and is often temporary. It serves to defend the place around which it is constructed. This enclosure does not have a geometrical form.

A redoubt is not necessarily built around a place. But, it could be an earthwork that is built within in permanent battlement. It reinforces the original fortification. even any place of refuge or defense is termed as redoubt.
