The word crayola is made up of two parts- craie and ola. The first part craie means chalk in French. The second word ola was taken from oleaginous which means oily. In Spanish, crayola is used as a generic term to denote crayons. Thus, crayola literally means oily chalk. Crayola is a brand name for a crayon manufacturing company. They market chalks, markers, and coloured pencils along with crayons. They also make other non-toxic artistry tools and writing material.

The cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith invented the Crayola crayons. The term crayola was coined by Alice, Binney's wife. They started with eight colours in 1903. In the year 2000, they produced 120 different colours. Today, they manufacture 240 coloured crayons.
