The ever popular brand of Crayola Crayons was invented by Edwin Binney along with his cousin C. Harold Smith. It was Alice, Binney's wife, who came up with the word "Crayola" when she combined the term "craie", which is the French word meaning chalk along with "olea" from the word "oleaginous", meaning oily. It is important to note that moreover, in Spanish, Crayola is a generic term for "crayon".

The Binney & Smith crayons' very first box was produced in the year 1903 and was sold for just a nickel. It comprised of only eight colours: red, yellow, orange, green, blue, violet, black and brown. It may be surprising to note that till 45 years later this colour mix along with the colour names did not change.
