A ball shaped bunch of entangled or plaited threads is known as a tassel. At one end of this ball dangles the loose threads and at the other end, there is a cord that protrudes out of the ball on which the tassel is hung. Normally Tassels are very decorative elements and they are often found hanging on bottom hem of garments, curtains, other hanging or even on mortar boards. The origin of the word tassel is from the Latin word which is known as "Tassau", this word in English means a clasp.
In modern times tassels or liripipes are mainly found on the mortar boards during the graduation ceremony. Today it is almost a universal ornament appearing in almost every country and seen in many cultures across the globe.
