The word septum has its origin in Latin and it is taken from the word saepes. Saepes means fence. Later, it was modified as saeptum which was obtained from the verb saepire (meaning to enclose). New Latin adapted it as septum. Septum literally means something that encloses. A septum is a small partition or separation. It divides a cavity or any mass of a tissue into two. For example: nasal septum. The separation in the atrium of the heart is termed atrial septum. The plural of septum is septa.

The term septum is also applied in Chemistry. The rubber stoppers that are used to close the mouths of bottles or seal flasks are called septa. They are structured to be pierced by a needle. A septum is used to handle moisture-sensitive or oxygen –sensitive material.
