The word steppe is defined specifically as the temperate, semi-arid areas where the vegetation mainly comprises treeless grassland. The steppes are mainly located in the mid-latitudes of the continents of Europe and Asia. In general terms, the word steppe means any such grassland.

It is also defined as one of the two types of dry climates. It is a marginal and more humid variant of the desert which separates it from the climates of the neighbouring regions, which are also humid. Steppe also refers to the vegetation which mainly comprises the short grasses which mainly grow in climate which is semi-arid.

The word steppe generally refers to any arid land which has xerophilous vegetation. It is usually found in such regions where the range of temperature is extreme and the soil is loess. It forms a large part of the south-eastern part of Europe and the south-western part of the former Soviet Union.
