The word 'sieur' is used as a noun and it is a title with which you can address somebody when you intend to give honour to the person. The word is not very popular because it is only an abbreviated form a more popular term 'seigneur' which can seek its derivation in French.

The word can trace its origin in the Middle English and the period it came into existence is around the second half of the fourteenth century.

Initially the word was in use only for a feudal lord but later it came into existence as a word that can be used as ward to give respect to somebody.

You can find several people who have earned great respect in the world and have used the title. One of the famous persons who used the title was Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Monts.
