Skene basically was a structure facing the audience creating the background prior to which performances were given. In conventional drama, the skene use to be the backdrop structure which linked the platform stage, costumes that were usually worn by characters were kept in this section.

The growth of the actor who implicated an individual part and answered the chorus, set up into drama a new type, the variation of acted scenes, or episodes. Due to which came the need for a section where the soloist could go back to during performances and switch costumes according to the need of the situation.

The term skene means 'tent" or 'hut" and it is said that the initial structure created for this purpose made from perishable matter, like wood, and was made only for time being purpose.
