The word selfish is an adjective and is used to describe people who are self- centred and self serving. For example: the selfish employer reduced the salary of labourers. Here, selfish explains that the employer for his selfish needs was making cuts in the salary of the people employed by him. A selfish person thinks only of himself and his own interests. He does not care for the welfare of others.

Selfish could also be used to describe something which has a base of selfishness. For example: a selfish idea. Here, selfish not describe the idea to be selfish but the idea has a base of selfishness. It means the person who proposed the idea is selfish.
