The word 'show-off' is used as a noun and the term can be employed to describe the kind of person who tries to impress others by showing them how good he is at doing some particular thing. The word is usually used in informal way and whenever you are using the term it mostly conveys your disapproval of the person.

The word is coined by the conjugation of two words; 'show' and 'off'. Show is a word that we use to convey the idea of making something clear or proving something and 'off' is a word that is added with some other word to make a negative out of it. So, the obvious meaning that can be figured out from the term is that when somebody is making something clear it goes wrong.
