Rebuke means to criticize or censure. It is a sharp reproof for some wrong action. It is act of admonishing somebody for his deeds and reprimanding him to change his or her ways. It refers to the disapproval expressed by pointing out faults or shortcomings. It is considered as a word with Germanic origin and is believed to have been derived from 'busche' which meant firewood. A rebuke often consists of sharp words that express strong disapproval for a fault or an offence.

It is a verb form. Reprimand, scold, chide, berate, lambaste, chastise, tell of, reproach etc is some of the synonyms of rebuke. This word is used as in" she was rebuked by her class teacher for her carelessness"; "he took the rebuke as a man". It is pronounced as ri'byook.
