Seth is a Hebrew name derived from a word meaning 'appointed' or 'placed.' In the bible it was the name of the third son of Adam and Eve, born after their son Abel was murdered by his brother Cain. It was a  popular name with the 17th century Puritans, especially for a boy born after the death of an elder sibling.
