As an adjective, the term opaque refers and means impenetrable by light; that is, something that is neither transparent nor translucent. Similarly, it is used to mean not reflecting light; that is, having no luster. It may also mean impenetrable by forms of radiant energy save for visible light. It may also be used in the general sense to mean obscure or unintelligible. In this sense of the term it could mean 'obtuse of mind'; used as a synonym for the term dense.
As a noun it is used to define or describe something that is opaque, particularly an opaque pigment which is used primarily in darkening portions of a negative or photographic print.
The adverb form of the word opaque is the word opaquely, while the noun form of the same is the term opaqueness. The term comes from the Middle English word opake, meaning shady; from the Latin term opacus.
