The word prerogative has its origin in Latin. It is taken form the word 'praerogativa'. It is the feminine form of praerogativus. It is obtained from prerogatus which is the past participle of prarogare. It was later adapted by the Old French and Middle English. Prerogative is the right or privilege of a person or a group or persons. It is a hereditary or an official right. Thus, it is synonymous to appanage, birthright, perquisite, right, authority; command, due, domination, exemption, dominion, sanction, claim, droit and choice.

The exclusive right of someone to command decide or rule or decide upon something is termed prerogative. Foe example: it is a chairman's prerogative to start and end the meetings. Prerogative could also mean a quality that grants superiority. Prerogative is also used as an adjective. Exercising a prerogative is also referred to as 'prerogative'.
