The word hemangioma is formed by combining two words 'hem' and 'angioma' and the meaning is somewhat the combined meaning of the two words.

The prefix 'hem' conveys the idea of blood and 'angioma' is used for a benign tumour that consists chiefly of dilated or sometimes newly formed blood vessels. So the word conveys the idea of a mass of blood vessels. The most common definition of the term that we find is that it is a congenial benign skin lesion that consists of dense and usually raised mass of dilated blood vessels.

Usually the term is used in pathology and you will hardly find it used in day-to day conversation. But sometimes, however, people use the word as this kind of phenomenon appears as birthmarks when a child is born.
