The word kies is usually used to describe the remains of a lunar crater. The remains have been inundated with basaltic lava. Today all that remains is the outer edge of the crater.

The coordinates of the crater are Coordinates 26.3° S, 22.5° W Its exact location is in the Mare Nubium and it lies south of the Bulliadus crater. To the northwest of the Kies is the Konig crater. Additionally to the southwest of this crater lies a lunar shaped dome structure appropriately called the Kies Pi. Its origin is widely believed to be volcanic and it has a tiny crater on the top of it.

Interestingly the Kies crater has several gaps which in turn form a series of ridges on its rim. Their formation resembles a ring.
