Dom basically is a group from the Middle East. They are a portion of the much bigger Roma cultural group. It is assumed that they may even be related to the Domba people from India.
They have a prosperous oral customs and generally portray their background and history through music, poetry and dance forms. The total population of this group is estimated at 2.2 million mainly found in countries like Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran. It is believed that their population is much more than 2.2 million as some Dom are left out from the national census and others tag them selves in national provisos rather than as Dom.
At present they speak the basic language spoke in the countries they live in but Domari which is their national language is used in more insular communities.
