The word Okmulgee has its origin in Creek language. It is spoken in the Creek Nation of the Oklahoma State in United States of America. The Creek people were also known as Muscogee or Muskogee. Their language is called Creek language or Mvskoke language. The Creek word 'okmulgee' has two parts: oki and mulgee. The first part 'oki' means water and the second part 'mulgee' means 'boiling or bubbing'. Thus, the literal meaning of the word 'okmulgee' becomes boiling water or bubbling water.

Okmulgee County is the Creek National Capital since the Civil War. The county of Okmulgee is enveloped by the Creek and Okfuskee to the West. The county of Muskogee is to the east of Okmulgee, Tulsa to the North, McIntosh to the south-east, and Wagoner to the north-east.
