When McIntosh is used in the sense of a name, it is believed to have come from the Gaelic name Mac-an-Toiseach. The word "toiseach" in the Gaelic has the meaning of chief, captain or leader and the word "Mc" are believed to stand for "son of". Thus if derived in such a way McIntosh would mean "son of the chief". The name of McIntosh is believed to be an ancient clan name found in Scotland. There is also a family crest associated with the McIntosh name. The coat of arms depicts a lion, a heart and a fist, a sea vessel, and a boars head in its four corners from the top left clockwise.

McIntosh also refers to a type of apple cultivar, a Canadian candy bar, a brand of computers etc. The similar word Mackintosh refers to a raincoat and there is even a place called McIntosh in Alabama.
