The word homo which comes from the Latin "homo" meaning man is the word referring to the species under the genus of Homo. It includes the extant and extinct species of humans.

Homo is also a kind of derogative term for a gay man or lesbian. Homo refers also to members that make up the human race. It can refer to a number of things including person, soul, body, creature, life, individual etc.

The word Sapiens comes from the Latin word "sapiens" meaning to taste or to be wise. Sapiens is an adjective that means relating to, of, or characteristic of Homo sapiens.

The two words Homo and Sapiens when used together as Homo sapiens refer to the human race or modern species that are humans. In the Latin tongue the two words used together mean "the wise human".
