Drosophila is genus name. Drosophila is any species of a small fruit fly belonging to the genus drosophila. Drosophila generally refers to the Drosophila melanogaster species that is widely used in genetic research. This fly is classified under phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, order Diptera, suborder Brachycera, family drosophilidae and subfamilyDrosophilinae.

It has its origin in New Latin. It is made up of the Greek word 'drosos' and the New Latin word '-phila' which is th e feminine of '-philus'. The word 'drosos' means dew and the suffix –philus means '-phile'. The word –phile means to love. Hence the word Drosophila means 'one who loves dew'. The name indicates that this fruit fly needs moist climates. The growth of the offspring of this species depends on temperature and it cannot endure colder temperatures or high altitudes. Thus, these flies cannot survive in these cold temperatures.
