Daemon is a Greek word. It is pronounced as dee-mun. It also means guardian spirit or soul in mythological terms.
Daemon is a program which is activated by a particular event. It is a program that runs continuously in the background. Daemon is a UNIX program that functions in background and is set to execute a process at any time when necessary. It functions as an extended part of the operating system. It is by and large an unattended process that is commencing at the startup. It is a program that runs constantly and is present for the purpose of managing the interrupted service requirements that a computer system anticipates to receive.

In computer terms daemon process means the process which running in sleep state in the background it becomes  active  when it is invoked by any process or system call. After completion of desired task its go back in sleep state again...
