Ebony refers to a one of several Asian or African trees that fall under the genus Diospyros. The wood obtained from any of the aforementioned trees, is also called as Ebony, mainly that which is obtained from the black heartwood and other particular types. These are usually used for piano keys, as well as cupboard work and inlaying.
In a related sense, ebony is also used as another word for the colour black.
Some ebony trees also give fruit such as the date plum and persimmon.
Economically, ebony is highly important, mainly because of its timber. The variety of timber that is the most popular is the heartwood, even though it isn't black in colour, only spotted with black.
The genus hails from South India and Sri Lanka; hence it is also referred to as Indian Ebony or Ceylon Ebony.
