The term culinary is defined as of or pertaining to used in cooking. Food is any substance that is eaten by living organisms, be it human beings, animals, birds, fish, insects or plants. Food also includes beverages. Food is the major source of energy and nutrition for all living organisms. It is usually of plant (that is vegetarian food) or animal (that is non-vegetarian food) origin.

Cooking as a profession is known as culinary profession. Some of the people connected with the culinary profession are chefs, the managers of restaurants, dieticians, nutritionist, dieticians, etc. The word culinary is derived from the Latin word culina. The word culina in the Latin language is kitchen.

The term culinary is commonly used to refer to all things related to cooking or the culinary profession. The culinary arts are taught as an academic discipline in many schools, colleges and universities which offer hospitality management courses.
