Compulsory means "obligatory" or "mandatory." A job or an activity, done out of coercion, becomes compulsory in nature. The possible synonyms of "compulsory" are imperative, requisite, necessary, binding etc. A set of rules and regulations which is to be abided or a commandment, is often compulsorily binding on people to follow. For example, consider this sentence which illustrates the word better: Attendance is compulsory in most schools.

The word was first used in English literature before the year 1588.When an activity is to be done compulsorily; it can have negative or positive repercussions. Sometimes when an activity is imposed or compelled upon anyone, it may make the person subjected, to rebel or retract. Compulsion, in a positive vein, can also lead to discipline and a proper code of conduction. For example, compulsory adhering to time-management can increase productivity.
