Coalition implies a temporary alliance formed by people, factions or nations. Due to the coalition, groups or competing organizations come together as one. A bloc, a federation, a union, a league, an alliance, a confederation are some of the examples or synonyms of a coalition. Very often one sees political groups forming a coalition party to overpower the opposing party or to pursue a common mission.

In military parlance, the coalition refers to nations dedicated to a military operation unified under a single command. A group of male lions that scare away and replace the existing male lions in order to mate with the females to produce the offspring is also said to be in a coalition. The word coalition comes from the Latin word "coalitus" which means "to grow together."
