Andromeda in ancient Greek Mythology was a mortal woman who happened to be the daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. As a punishment for her mother's bragging and vanity she was chained to a rock and was supposed to have been sacrificed to a sea monster. However, she was rescued by the hero Perseus who later married her. The word Andromeda literally means "to think of a man".

The word andromeda is a Greek term and it represents some body that can be attributed with the title of 'Ruler over Men'.

In every day use the word represents a galaxy which is also called Messier 31 and is approximately 2.5 million light years away from the earth. The galaxy is the largest one in its group which also consists of the Milky Way, the Triangulum galaxy and thirty other smaller galaxies. Even you can see the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eyes if there is no pollution in the area you are residing in.

The galaxy has long been a fancy of many science fiction writers and they assume that there is life on this galaxy and those aliens would try to invade our planet the earth.

Andromeda is the closest galaxy to our galaxy the Milky way although it is 2 million light years away. The name Andromeda is also a greek term like Vicky said, but Andromeda is a girls name in the Greek language so Andromeda is named after a Greek Goddess. Leah
