The word is Hors D"Oeuvres. Its actually a French phrase which means "out of time". Its used for items that are served other than the main meal or in other words "appetizers".

To pass or in past tense passed, the hors d'ouevres, means that the plate or serving tray containing the appetizers or 'snacks' will be transferred from one person to another, as with a sit down meal, or when there are servers to bring them to an individuals place or plate.
