The term heliotropism is used for a plant and the word is being used for the kind of plants that grow away from the light of the sun. It can also be used for anything that has such tendency of growth. You can see such kind of tendency to grow in sunflowers that do that act to get the continuous sun on every part of theirs.

The word probably has its origin in a kind of plant that is known to the world as heliotrope and it is known for its sweet smell and the purple colour. Sometimes if you want to convey the idea of the pale purple colour, you can use the word.

The word is being used since quite long time and probably it was first used around the sixth decade of the nineteenth century.
