In Old English the word wicca means sorcerer. People who have adopted the practices of the ancient witch craft prefer the name Wicca because of the prejudice against witches by Christians.

Wicca is a neopagan, nature-based religion made up in 1954 by a retired British civil servant called Gerald Gardner. The word has no earlier meaning. Wicca has some similarities to Druidism.
