The original Greek name was Khristoferos. It comes from Khristos, "Christ" and "pherein" to carry or bear. The early Christians used this name a lot, as it had the idea of "carrying Christie, in the heart.) Later this developed into a legend, that St Christopher had literally carried the young Christ across a river (hence the St Christopher's medal still often worn by travellers.)
