The word ‘regulatory’ is a term that is used to suggest that there is some kind of control, or rule over something. It is a principle or a method that is used to ensure that something is done the right way, or something ultimately ends up ‘correct’. For instance, somebody in the household may take the role of regulating household expenses. This means that there will be rules about what is purchased in the food shopping every week, and how much money is spent on bills like electricity, Internet access and gas.

Regulatory also means to be able to adjust to some particular standard or requirement. It is similar to the words amount, or degree. For instance, somebody may regulate the temperature. This means that somebody will be ensuring that the temperature is kept at a particular level. Somebody may regulate the amount of fuel in their car, or regulate the amount of water that is in a dog bowl.

Finally, the word regulatory is used in order to ‘adjust’, so that accuracy of an operation can be ensured. For instance, a watch may be regulated.

Regulations are usually considered as rules, too. Rules are there not only in a household, but within large organisations so as to ensure that everything is done correctly and all people working for the business and those who are affected by the business are treated as fairly as possible. Furthermore, regulations are put in place to ensure that everybody remains safe - so for instance, fire regulations will be in place to ensure that everybody can escape from a fire without being put in any more danger during their escape.
