Actually, I believe Des Moines is French for "Some Monks"

In the early days, before the Louisiana purchase, French fur traders were pretty heavy in the area, and when they came upon a new place, they tended to name it in a pretty coarse manner after some of the things they saw: For example, Baton Rouge means "Red Stick." (Why there was a red stick there, I'll probably never know.)

So, presumably, there were some monks in the area.

Hence, Des Moines. :]

The name Baton Rouge comes from the bloody pike which the French revolutionaries (i.e. Robespierre and the rest of the radicals) put Marie Antoinette's head on after decapitation, ushering in an era known as the reign of terror in which some twenty thousand people were publicly killed via the guillotine. Therefore, the "Baton Rouge" has become a symbol of liberty and freedom from oppression. It was meant as a deterrent to contradict the naming of Louisville after King Louis the fourteenth.

There is evidence that moingona means "excrement faces", but for obvious reasons, folks in Des Moines don't take that translation seriously.

Des Moines basically is the capital of the most populated city of the State of Lowa. It was integrated in the year 1851 as the Fort Des Moines, though it was later shortened to "Des Moines" in the year 1857.

It is also the control centre for the Principal Financial Group, the Meredith Corporation and Ruan Transportation. Many other companies like the Wells Fargo, ING Group and John Deree have immense operations in or around the metro region. It was even ranked in the Forbes Magazine as the 11th "Best Place for Business" in the 2006 edition.

The population of this place is estimated at 194,163 and the total area of this region is 200.1 square kilometres out of which 196.3 square kilometres is land and 3.8 square kilometres is water.
