Where Is The Surname HOLE From And What Is It's Meaning?

My name is..... ALAN HOLE I COME FROM WALES, My family goes back a few generations but now I live in Sweden and their are many people called Hole in Norway and also a couple of villages

Hi, my name is Jon Hole. I live in Canada. My father was born in Bradford, Yorkshire England.

There are also people with the last name "Holes" in the U.S. And probably in the U.K. I'd suspect there is a connection but then again it seems like a pretty common name overall, maybe not a "Smith" or something but nothing to write home about.    Anyway I traced my genealogy using census records to back around 1820 for "Holes" in the U.S., before that I can't find anything on my grandfather's side. On my grandmother's side it goes back to 1790 but obviously that doesn't have much to do with the issue of the family name Holes.
