Where Does The Surname Bartley Come From And What Does It Mean? I Believe It Is English But Am Not Quite Sure. Please Help.
Thank you. I was always rather proud to be English and being an American actress was always doing Shakespeare and the like because I have an amazing ear for the dialects as well as being an award winning actress. However, after studying history and traveling the world and learning how most feel about Americans, I learned that quite many feel similar about the British but the Celts were different-they never gave into tyranny with their true fighting spirit. I have to admit I love England and have spent many wonderful times there and was even asked to marry a Royal Shakespearean actor. Working in my capacity for the govt., I found out things I never really wanted to know about both of our countries which shamed me on both sides. However, I am what I am British and Celtic, and American and American Indian. So I guess you could say I am a true melting pot dichotomy! On a last note, I did find our family crest for Bartley which is simple but represents us going back as knights. You are right you are lovely people as many Americans are as well but suffer a bad rap.
I have another slant that you might prefer to accepting English heritage.
My great (times a few) grandfather, Martin Bartley was Irish. He emigrated from Ireland to Australia in the 1840's - willingly I might add, not in chains.
Unfortunately, being halfway round the world it's been difficult to find details of his life, family or heritage in Ireland.
I have also heard that Bartley is an Anglicised version of the Scottish MacPharlain. The name was changed at a time when being a Mc or Mac could be fatal.

The name Bartley means ploughman and is definitely an English name I'm not sure about your husbands last name though may I ask why you don't want your name Bartley to be English I'm English we English are lovely people
The Irish for Bartley is Mac Parthaláin ( son of the Parthalonian). Apparently these were a Greek tribe that moved west across Europe and invaded Ireland from Spain. So there!
