The last name origin is German and it is occupational name for someone who lived and worked in a great house. In Middle High German, Middle Low German hūs 'house'.
The surname Haus did not get its origins from Germany. There are variations of the name Haus in Germany such as my family's which is Hauss, but if you trace it back even further, which I have, the extra "s" was added on when the family migrated from France to Germany to eventually New York and Canada. So, though my family always thought it was a German last name, when doing the actual genealogical research it was revealed that the name Haus is French, with the German spelling being Hauss and other variations of Haus.
