The name Jack is pronounced jak. It is of Old English origin. Name based on John (Hebrew) "the Lord is gracious", or Jacques, the French form of Jacob (Hebrew) "he who supplants." The name has a rugged, down-to-earth aura.

During the Middle Ages, Jack was so common that it was used as a general term for 'man' or 'boy'. Jackie is used more for girls than for boys. Actors Jackie Gleason, Jack Nicholson, Jack Black; comedian Jack Benny; exercise guru Jack LaLanne.

Same as above, derived from the viking pet name Jankins.

Originated from Avoch area in the Black Isles, Scotland.  The Jack name does not belong to a clan and does not have an official tartan.

Tartans are only just over 200yrs old, they are a glamour and were really only worn by the wealthy.

Update from above. There is evidence of Viking culture on the black Isle and the name has connections with the Norse name Jacobsen or jacobson. I have recently found out that the people on the black Isle had a different dialect and used different words from neighbouring Scots. Apparently it was related to French Gaelic from the Britany area.
I have more research to do on this connection.

Surname: Jack[[B:Male or Masculine name  Usage:]] English  Pronounced: JakDerived from Jacklin(earlier Jakin) a medieval pet form of John. American writers Jack London and Jack Kerouao were 2 famous bearers of this name  Scottish and English: from a Middle English personal name, Jakke, from Old French Jacques, the usual French form of Latin Jacobus, which is the source of both Jacob and James. As a family name in Britain, this is almost exclusively Scottish.   English and Welsh: from the same personal name as 1, taken as a pet form of John.   German (also Jäck): [[I:from a short form of the personal name Jacob.   Americanized form of one or more like-sounding Jewish surnames.]]  Hopefully this helps you!
