The name Lucy is extremely popular in English-speaking countries and its equivalents are equally popular in many non-English speaking countries in Europe in particular. The name is of Latin origin and is the feminine form of the name Lucius. Lucius was a very popular man's name in the Roman empire and was adopted by emperors such as Gauis Lucius Flavius.
In many European countries, in particular Sweden, December 13 is known as the feast day of Saint Lucy. Saint Lucy is the patron saint of the blind and December 13 is celebrated as a festival of light.

The name Lucy is also related to the word lucid which means clarity in reasoning and understanding. The names Lucie, Lou, Lucinda, Lucida, Lucretia, Lucite, Luz and Lucille in French are all different variations from the same root word Lucid. The dictionary defines Lucid as:

1. Easily understood; completely intelligible or comprehensible: A lucid explanation.

2. Characterized by clear perception or understanding; rational or sane: A lucid moment in his madness.

3. Shining or bright.

Famous Lucys include; Lucille Ball who was an all-round American star, featuring in  films, television, stage and radio. She was also a model, an executive of film and television and star of many sitcoms. Lucille ball was hugely popular and influential in Hollywood and had one of the longest Hollywood careers of anyone in her lifetime. And Lucy Alexis Liu, who is an American actress best remembered for her role as the cold-hearted Ling Woo in the hit series Ally McBeal from 1998 to 2002. In more recent years, Lucy Lui has turned her talents to film, as an actress and as a film executive.
