The name Goliath is a masculine Biblical name. It may mean 'uncovered' in Hebrew. In the Old Testament, Goliath was a Giant of the Philistine city of Gath who presented a challenge to the Israelites. This challenge was taken up by a young man named David, who was strengthened by his faith. He managed to kill the giant with the help of a stone delivered by a slingshot.

David was the youngest of eight sons of Jesse. He overheard Goliaths conceited challenge while going to deliver roasted grain and bread to his brothers. He got enraged on hearing the challenge put forth, and decided to accept it. before David accepted the challenge, Goliath had been issuing the challenge for forty days, two times in a day, but no one came forward till David.
