The term revolt means to break away or rise against constituted authority. A rebellion in its basic form means the refusal to accept authority. It can also be seen as encompassing a variety of behaviours from civil disobedience to an aggressively structured effort to devastate established authority.

It is extensively applied in reference to equipped confrontation against a well known government, but can even be applied for mass non-violent resistance movements. Those who take part in rebellions are commonly known as "rebels". Over the period of years the numerous groups that have opposed authorities were known as rebels. In America, the term was applied for the Continentals by the British during the Revolutionary War as well as by the Confederacy by the Union during the American Civil War.
