The word "armistice" is a noun that means a cessation of fighting temporarily by mutual consent. It is also sometimes referred to as a truce. It implies an agreed upon lull in fighting that does not guarantee either a cessation of hostilities or fighting in the near future, but it usually is. It is a decision of the parties to a conflict to declare peace and discus terms. The word "armistice" is taken from the French and derived from the Latin word "armisitium"; from the Latin words arma and –stitium meaning arms and stopping respectively. An armistice can be defined as an agreement that establishes peace.

Antonyms of armistice would be war and fighting and synonyms of the word include truce and cease fire. An example of the word used in sentence structure is, "both sides continued to arm themselves despite the armistice that had been declared".
