The term foreground refers to that part of a scene or an image which is closest to and right in front of the person who is viewing it. In simple words, it is that part which is the nearest and therefore the most prominent and visible to the viewer.

It can also refer to something that calls attention to something in particular, for example: 'he is presently at work on a trilogy of articles that foreground the Vietnam War'. This usage basically refers to place the spotlight or the highlight a certain thing or occurrence. It refers to giving prominence to one thing, above all others, in order to make it more noticeable.

In computer slang, foreground refers to the act of bringing a task on the top of one's stack or priority list for instant processing.
