Breach can be used as either a noun or a verb.

As a noun it has two meanings, the more literal meaning is that of an opening a tear or a rupture, particularly in a solid structure or fortification.

A breach can also refer to violation or infraction, usually of a law, legal obligation or promise. It is slightly vaguer than a violation. A violation is a wilful transgression of a law or obligation, whereas a breachcould refer to any transgression, incidental or wilful.

Sometimes breach is used to refer to a break in relationships as in "a widening breach between government and Church”

As a verb breach has several other meanings.

It can refer to the action of creating a breach either in the sense of breaking through a wall or fortification, or in the sense of breaking a law, moral code or agreement.

To breach a wall causes a breach in the wall.

Whales are said to breach when they leap from the water and the breaking of waves or surf is also referred to as breaching.

Examples of breach used in sentences.

The besieging forces managed to breach the defenders walls.
