A look in the dictionary would tell you that Stationary (with an "a") means some thing that is immovable, at rest or some thing that stays at its place. However, the word is often confused with "Stationery" (with an "e"), which constitutes for envelopes, paper, pen, pencils, note pads and any other item that is in relation with writing material.

The two words are by some way related in their origin as both constitute from the word "Station", which means to be at one place. The meaning of Stationary (with an "a") directly derives from station,  and for Stationery (with an "e") it also derives from station in a sense that people selling the writing material mostly stayed at one place rather than being sporadic-people who move around often.

Data shows that internet users often use stationary (with an "a") in their search even when they are looking for materials related to writing material which obviously is Stationery (with an "e"). A detail look at the research shows that 67.8% searching for email stationary (with an "a") than the rest 32.2% choosing the correct spelling of Email stationery (with an "e"). Another spelling mistake that occurs is between Weddings stationary being spelled by 60.4% and correctly by 40.6%

I thought everyone knew the difference between these two but my son's first grade teacher sent parent "stationary" home with him for using when writing to the teacher.
