The word "Tamar" can apply to a number of things. It is a Hebrew name for girls but sometimes it is given to boys as well. It is supposed to mean "palm tree". Tamar is also another name of the palm tree in Botany.

Tamar is a biblical name and is found mentioned in three different places in the bible for three different people. It was the name of Judah's daughter-in-law. She had been the wife of both his elder sons and was prevented by Judah from marrying his youngest son when both her elder sons had in turn died. She is mentioned to have disguised herself and seduced him.

There is also mention of the daughter of Maachah and David whose name was also "Tamar" and finally another "Tamar" the daughter of Absalom.
